Hot...Hot...Hot!

So, far it has been a scorcher of a summer and there’s plenty more heat to come. It’s the time of year when people opt for beer and cocktails over wine and even the diehard red wine drinkers go for a white instead. It took me a while to learn to give up my reds, but a crisp white wine just makes SENSE in 99-degree Georgia summers!

As always, I would encourage you to try some “off the beaten path” whites so here is a little guide that I hope will help you branch out.

Beach Wine?

I suppose early March is a bit early to start talking about sunny days but the weather has been so beautiful the last few days, I just can't help it. Also I am currently enjoying a weekend with my amazing family at St. George Island and had the pleasure of being spoiled by the incredible hospitality of Wayne and Terri from Grits Café at their weekend house in Tybee...so I have the beach and summer on my mind!

Red Wine... Decaf, Please?

We've all heard of coffee beer, coffee vodka, and other coffee flavored drinks but coffee wine? It all started in 1925 when Abraham Perold, a professor at Stellenbosch University got the idea to cross Pinot Noir with a little know French grape called Cinsault (known as Hermitage in South Africa). He planted a few seeds at his personal residence, but sort of forgot about them when he accepted a job with the giant South African winery cooperative KWV and moved. His residence stood unoccupied for some time, so after a while the University sent a team to clean up the overgrown garden.

Green Wine?

 

Portugal is usually known for the dessert wines Port and Madeira, but the country has been producing wonderfully dry, crisp wines since at least the 10th century BC when the Phoenicians arrived in the area bringing relatively modern wine-making techniques and new varietals to the area.
