Don't Make Honey Where You Make Money

I could hear my mother's sage advice in my head as I drove to my assignment. It was already too late for me to heed her words. Billie and I had been "making honey" for the past few months now and, man, was it sweet. It was an odd feeling keeping my burgeoning relationship with Billie a secret from co-workers. I found myself reverting to third grade tactics. I was being slightly more caustic towards her, figuring that busting her chops would hide the fact I was actually digging her.

Spring had hit full force and, as the temperatures warmed and days grew longer, there was a steady hub of activity amongst local diners. The change in seasons definitely brought folks out of their hibernation. A series of local festivals added to the busy season. It was good for restaurants, good for people, but bad for me. It meant I was suddenly running all over town covertly keeping a watchful eye, making sure quality was upheld.

I suddenly found myself in the enviable position of having an occasional Friday free. As opposed to spending my time catching up on needed chores, I chose to fritter my Friday amongst the "working stiffs". I dressed more casually than usual to ensure those poor blokes would know it wasn't just a Casual Friday for me, but a day off.

My rare night off had been hijacked by inclement weather. I was left with no recourse but to sulk and stew while blowing the occasional mournful note into my trusty Olds Opera. As busy as I had been with work, my Opera trombone seemed to be the only friend I was spending any time with. I blew one last note as my stomach let out a mournful noise of its own. I suddenly realized my hunger was definitely a contributing factor to my dour mood.

The holiday season seemed to fly by and I looked at the New Year as ringing in a series of new beginnings. Having a partner, Billie, did make my workload much lighter. Unfortunately, that was the only thing lightening up.

Happy Holidays from the Sleuth

As I walked to work, I felt the crunch of the leaves beneath my boots. I couldn't help but equate the sound to the time crunch I was also feeling. A rash of restaurant thievery had me working double-time. Knowing the in and out of local kitchens somehow made me the go-to-guy for the law.
