Beef and Fresh Tomatoes

Strictly Southern
When given the combination of the two items above, I was a little perplexed. Beef and fresh tomatoes are usually great by themselves. The combination of the two makes my mouth water when I think about tacos or a great steak. But the more I thought about it, the more I thought about a family favorite.

Southern’s Fried Green Tomatoes

Spring is the perfect time to find green tomatoes. This is part of the reason I want to grow tomatoes in my garden. These are a great addition to any meal.

Teresa, Teresa, Oh, how does your garden grow?

Teresa, Teresa, Oh, how does your garden grow? With things in pots, things that bloom and things that do not. What started all this nonsense? Mentioning it in this column did it not?

Southern's Corn Pancakes

These aren't pink pancakes, but it is my all-time favorite pancake recipe...aside from my Daddy's homemade ones. You will realize Jiffy isn't just for cornbread anymore. This is the recipe from the box, but I add cinnamon and vanilla to make them taste even better.

The Mystery of the Great Pink Pancake

Some are thinking about Spring's brilliant arrival as March rolls in. Some are counting the days until Spring Break, while others plan vacations or think about other Summer plans.

Risky Risotto

Being a fan of cooking shows long before there was an entire television network dedicated to it, I listened to chefs talk about all sorts of dishes I had never tasted...usually on Georgia Public Television.

Southern's Mushroom Risotto

This is the first risotto recipe I have cooked and it is delicious…just as the recipe states. But I'm not the kind of cook that follows the rules. The final addition of fresh Parmesan cheese really puts the dish over the top for me.

Southern's Lamb Chops

Lamb is one of my favorite dishes. It's a Christmas tradition to serve leg of lamb in my family, but the rest of the year we fill our craving with lamb chops. The addition of mint truly adds depth to the dish. The smashed potatoes are from a recipe I found online after eating them at a chain restaurant and decided I could do better.

Every Woman Should Have...

"…A woman should have eight matching plates, wine glasses with stems, and a recipe for a meal that makes her guests feel honored..."

-Pamela Redmond Satran

I read this line in an email forwarded to me many years ago. Though the poem goes on line-by-line saying as its title does, A Woman Should Have, this line always stayed with me. Good poetic lines always do.

December Tidings

It's time to loosen the notches on your belt and try to find a way to dress up your jogging pants for work. Yes, this is the time of year when that button on your pants struggles to reach the other side. I contribute my pounds gained to a variety of things. I blame it on all the wonderful events held by my family and friends during the Holidays.
