Historic Macon’s PARTY OF THE YEAR
Saturday, April 25, 2009 from 7:00 -11:00 pm
at the old Karsten Denson Building, 536 Third Street in downtown Macon
At the stroke of midnight on January 16, 1920, America went dry. There wasn’t a place in the country (including your own home) where you could legally have even a glass of wine with your dinner without breaking the law. The 18th Amendment, known as the Volstead Act, prohibited the manufacture, sale and possession of alcohol in America. The era known as “Prohibition” had begun. Prohibition created a booming black market economy. Speakeasies replaced neighborhood saloons. Plush nightclubs opened, with exotic floor shows and the hottest bands. Guests danced to the Charleston and drank bootleg liquor out of tea cups – just in case there was a police raid. Jazz ruled the day; the “Jazz Age” had arrived. Just six months after Prohibition became law, women won the right to vote. The flapper was the heroine of the day. She was easy to spot; she wore her skirts short and bobbed her hair. She turned down her hose, powdered her knees and painted her lips bright red.
It is with great excitement that we announce the Party of the Year. Join us on April 25th at the site of the old Karsten Denson hardware store, which will be transformed into a 1920’s speakeasy. This beautiful building, built in 1914 by Dr. W.E. Lee, is now owned by Marco Danese and Damaste Real Estate, who have graciously made it available to Historic Macon for this event. Costumes from the 1920’s are encouraged. CALL 478-742-5084 for reservations and tickets.
